'Twas the Night Before Christmas...and Where I Have Been

The journey that I started when I first wrote on this humble, little blog, brought me to an oasis that I haven't really left yet. Yes, baseball card wise, it was a great year. I have both series of the eponymous product, plus the update set. I set sail aboard the Gypsy Queen for another year and spent some time with Allen and Ginter's. I also have all 32 team sets, so Hobby-wise, 2015 was great.

But for the blog, not so much.

All of the hopes I had for this blog in 2015...most of the things I wanted to write about here in 2015...lost opportunities:
  • The card census...started at 660...never moved higher.
  • The Rookie Review? Where did the time go?
  • The End of the Year All-Star Teams? A flash drive issue put the teams on the back burner.
  • Heck, even my Wallet Card took journeys and they weren't even posted here.

Work and personal time took precedence and the blog was...not ignored nor forgotten, but neglected.

That's the word. Neglected.

I had all of these ideas about what to write about, but then a project would come up that would take up a great portion of my work day. By the time I was done, I would be so spent mentally that I just wasn't ready anymore to write. While this is by no means an excuse, it does explain a lot about how my year has been personally.

Even the Sports Card Blogroll, while still a good source of bringing together the Hobby's best independent voices, was taking a hit. I have a number of people asking for their blogs to be added, but just haven't gotten around to it.

I have even thought about ending my run on this blog because there were times I just thought that I didn't have the time to commit to it anymore.

Then I realized something.

I wasn't writing about the Hobby I love because I wanted to be popular and get my name out there. I wrote this blog for me. If people stumbled onto my blog, liked what I wrote, and then continued to read about my journey, then that's a good thing. I should not allow the pressures of maintaining a blog get to me. This isn't a job. I'm not getting paid. I'm supposed to be doing this for fun.

So what does this mean?

It means, that in 2016, I plan on rectifying this situation. It will no longer be a matter of not having time if I don't do anything around here, it's about making time to write and express myself. In the past, I promised to get back at it (writing here). No more. I can't deal with the empty promises. Not to whatever readers I have left, but to myself.

So hear is the deal. Today is Christmas. A time of celebration. A time to reflect. A time of gift-giving, and time to be with family. My gift for this blog is time. Not full blown hours, but enough to let people know I'm still here. I'm still active in my Hobby, and I'm still willing to write about it. With that, it also means a bit more of a time to enjoy the collection of cards I have now while looking forward to the cards and future of this Hobby.

This past year may not have been the best for the blog. I am going to make sure that it doesn't carry over in 2016.

From my family to yours, have a very Merry Christmas.

May Santa Claus bring whatever you wish for in your stockings on this day. Including baseball cards.

Sincerely,

JayBee Anama

Please Stand By!!!

We were hit by some kind of virus a few weeks back. Then, thanks to the gout flareup, I haven't been able to touch the home computer in the basement. Now that we have the proper anti-virus software so we don't get hit again (and again), I have to re-install the software for my scanner (so that I can put images onto this humble, little blog).

One problem, I seem to have lost the original software.

Problem solved: Hewlett Packard has all the software to download on its website.

It will take a bit, but this site will be up and running soon...

Sooner than I thought.

Here is a test image. See if it works. And for the record, yes, I do have this card in my possession.

2013 Topps Update Series #US313 Mariano Rivera SP card.

Thank you for your patience. We will be back with our regular programming soon.

Sincerely,

JayBee Anama

To the People Who Utilize the Sports Card Blogroll...I Am So Sorry!!!

I didn't realize that I haven't written about updating the Sports Card Blogroll since April on this humble, little blog, and then I did an update roughly three months ago, and didn't bother writing a post.

For that, I am sorry.

I know readership on my blog is down by almost 50% a day, at least that's what my Sitemeter says. I know that since I've been back at work, the quality of posts here has collapsed to the point where I don't think anybody cares anymore.

I feel bad about that.

I used to keep tabs on the Hobby Blogging Community religiously. But since being employed again (I'm happy about this, don't get me wrong), updating the big Blogroll has taken a backseat.

But since October, I've been able to bring back the Random Cards of the Day, the regular daily segments, the Minor League cards, and Team Sets. So why not, before November, update the Blogroll.

Now, I have officially lost count of how many blogs have come and gone since April. I can tell you that on the last update, the following blogs were removed from the roster:
As of today, the SCBR holds 369 active blogs. These are being removed because they have been inactive for 6, 7, 8, and even 9 months of inactivity. Get ready, it's a long list:
That's 38 blogs that will be removed from the SCBR shortly. The total will bring the number of blogs on the main site down to 331.

Whoa!!!

There are so many things that have yet been written about the Hobby we all love. It is the hope that as the year comes to a close that the new year brings us fans of the blogs new writers, new voices, and hopefully new collectors who are willing to share their collections with the rest of the world.

And maybe their blogs will be added to the active sites that the SCBR.

Sincerely,

To Show That the Blog Has Not Died...Yet...

Thank you to all the people who have sent me emails asking if I am all right. I know that I haven't posted much on this humble little blog lately, and if you see the history (like last year), you will see that I didn't post much from the time after the All-Star Break until I became unemployed.

But rest assured that I am fine, and that things are actually all right on the personal side of things. Really. A couple of bits of good news may come soon.

Anyway, I have had a number of requests lately to add more blogs to the Sports Card Blogroll. Yes, I've looked at them (when emailed to me at bdj610@hotmail.com). I just have not had the opportunity to add them to the big blogroll yet. I am hoping to do so this evening/weekend.

Rest assured that the collection has grown a bit in the last couple of weeks (finally saved enough to buy for 2013 Topps Series II, Topps Archives, and Topps Pro Debut).

So I'm sorry for the lack of posts. I don't know if I can catch up to the last seven plus weeks of missing Random Cards of the Day...maybe I'll scale it back a bit and put a scan of the card front and back and scrap the bio/commentary (too much involved in research I guess).

And yes, I'm going to the National. Saturday for sure, maybe Sunday, but Saturday is a sure bet.

Sincerely,

JayBee Anama

Retired But Relevant Section Added to the Sports Card Blogroll

Sorry for the lack of posts. In fact, I think this is the first time I've written on here in May. This humble little blog will be 4-years-old very soon, a long time for a Hobby Card Blog.

I've been very busy these last few weeks. Yes, I've bought cards (I found the Cubs and the two All-Star Team retail sets and will go over them soon). If you catch the Facebook patch on the sidebar of the blog, you'd see that last week, my daughter (the big Derrek Lee fan) and her dance troupe won gold at the Starbound National Dance competition, and we got to watch her perform. I'm so proud of her. But I digress.

At the end of April, I updated the Sports Card Blogroll. The glitches, as you probably had read on here, have finally been fixed and I've been busy adding a number of new blogs to the site. But I also had to remove a few, including one that caught a lot of people's attention: '75 Topps (it's far out man). First came the comments:

Maybe a new list for blogs which have a start and finish, like the '75 Topps blog. He 'finished' it, but it's a great resource and a great read. Like Dickens, these are like serial novels, but they do end, yet continue to exist and serve.

Then from 30-Year Old Cardboard:

I agree with Anonymous, completing a set-based blog is a major accomplishment. Maybe creating a 'retired blogs' section would be a good idea? I would hate to see that blog just disappear...

Finally, an e-mail from friend of the blog Mark Aubrey:
I'm going to petition you to add the "1975 Topps (it's far out, man)"blog to the Sports Card Blogroll Hall of Fame section. I think thatis on par with the 88 Topps Cards blog.
It won't be updated and it really is a work.

What a dilemma.  What should I do???

If you haven't read the blog, Night Owl, who already is a prolific writer and number one on many blogger's reading lists, did a great job with profiling every card from the 1975 Topps set.  Breaking every down card into a ton of different and unique categories (down to the grouping of two-colored borders), he gave each card a glowing biography.  The blog itself even reads like a book just of the iconic '75 Topps set.

Now the problem.  Is the blog Hall of Fame Worthy?  The Blogroll presently contains three blogs in the HOF section.  These blogs will never be removed from the SCBR ever.  All three were placed on the HOF section because the blogs and the writers broke new ground.  They were influential to a number of writers (including yours truly) and inspired us to dive into the Hobby blogging pool.  88 Topps Cards was the first blog enshrined into the SCBR HOF.  I wrote the reasons why almost three years ago.  Andy, who wrote the blog, gave each card in both the regular and traded 1988 Topps sets its own day in the sun.  And it was a pioneer in that nobody else had done a blog about one entire set and, up to that point, done so to completion.  The fact that his site still gets more than a thousand readers a month, more than three years after the blog ended is a testament to what a incredible reference the site is and an influence to many who have dared to create a blog focused on one specific set.  Want to know how challenging a blog of this magnitude is?  Andy was working on a blog for the 1978 Topps set, but was not able to finish it (to his credit though, he did manage to complete a blog for the 1988 Score Traded set, and was working on another card blog before giving up on the genre altogether).

So back to the point?  Is the '75 set blog HOF worthy?  Perhaps.

Should every blog that focuses on a specific set manage to be completed be included into the HOF section of the blogroll?  No.

I mean, even that 88' Score Traded blog managed to be completed, but it's not HOF worthy (nothing against it Andy...even if it highlights Score cards).  Just like debates regarding which players should be inducted into real HOF's or not (and please, I don't want to get into any arguments here), I know that whatever I decide to do, I'll get called out on it.  For now, I am not going to put the '75 blog on the HOF section (the writer is still active, and is presently working on not one, but TWO set blogs to go with his eponymous blog).

So before you get out the torches and pitchforks, I have come up with a compromise.  I have added a new section to the blogroll called "Retired, but Relevant."  It is not going to be part of the main page, but instead on the sidebar just underneath the HOF section.  The blogs added to this section will never be removed (but they will also not count towards the active blog roster).  I am going to add the '75 Topps blog to this site as it is still extremely relevant (and as a completed blog should be linked in perpetuity on the blogroll anyway).  I have added five other blogs to this section as while they are no longer active (save for probably one...), they make great reference sites, especially because of the subject matter.  This is probably where completed set blogs will be going when the time comes (note that I said COMPLETED set blogs...if you were working on one and didn't finish, it probably won't be going here).  So along with the '75 Topps blog, I am adding the Red Hearts Cards blog to this section.

Yes, the set contains only 33 cards.  Yes, the set consists of cards found as a premium that came included with cans of dog food.  But when a small, hardly recognized set that came out in 1954 could score both Mickey Mantle and Stan Musial while Topps could not, (and Bowman didn't have Musial in 1954 either), you have an incredible looking set.  Yes, the writing about each card is brief compared to the '88 and '75 Topps cards (understatement), but he completed the now 58-year-old set (and none were reprints).  So that goes there.

Also, I've always wanted to put the sites that were created after the now popular Ginter Codes were solved.  Jason Wong (2008), Nick Jacoby & Mike Gellner (2009), Jacoby & Company (2010), and the trio of Guillaume,  Frank, and Ryan (2011) each cracked the Ginter Codes AND wrote blogs explaining how they did it.  Instead of having to search for each one, I thought what better way than to have them added onto the blogroll in one easy to find location?  So all four of the solution blogs have been added to this new section as well (honestly, the 2011 answer blog isn't retired, but I highly doubt that the boys will be writing on there any time soon).

So there you have it.  A compromise.  I'm not saying that the '75 Topps blog isn't HOF worthy.  It's just that I wanted to save that section for the truly inspirational, the truly unique, the truly pioneering blogs of this Hobby (and they managed to reach six months of inactivity at one point or another).  The three blogs inducted into the HOF meet that criteria (along with 88 Topps Cards, the other two blogs are The Baseball Card Blog and Dinged Corners).  There are handful of blogs that, when the time comes, will be added to the HOF some day.  But for now, the membership remains at three.

I thank all who left comments regarding Night Owl's '75 Topps blog.  I invite all of you to tell me what blogs should be included in the R & R section of the blogroll.  Certainly the six I picked are worthy of inclusion.  But I leave it up to you to tell me if I'm missing any other blogs that are no longer on the active blogroll that should be added back into this new section.  Send me e-mails at bdj610@hotmail.com or leave comments on this humble little blog and tell me what you think.

This makes three straight posts on here about the SCBR.  Maybe one day, I might want to start talking about cards again.

Sincerely,

JayBee Anama

Two Months Worth of Blogroll Updating!!!

The Blogger glitches that has plagued the Sports Card Blogroll (and for that matter every blog that tries to link more than 160 blogs on a roll at a time) is still ongoing.  I am beginning to think that I should get rid of the Most Recent Blog Posts section entirely and reformat the rest of the rolls so that it features all the fun things (including pictures and blog previews) that made the Most Recent Blog Posts section popular in the first place.

I also realize that I did not do any maintenance on the SCBR at the end of March.  So now I'm a month behind (so what else is new).  So at our last post, we were up to 354 active blogs.  During March and April, a scant nine blogs were added, bringing the total to 363 blogs.  Here are the blogs that should have been removed back at the end of March (now reaching seven months of inactivity):

And here are the ones now being removed due to six months of inactivity:
That's eight blogs total.  This brings the grand total down to 355 active blogs, a net gain of +1 for a two month period.

I'll be honest, the new job and hours has taken a bit of time away from the 'net (which in a way was a good thing as it was taking away productivity).  It didn't help that blogger was still having issues with the blog rolls and even after switching to Google Chrome, the problems still did not go away.

I do have a few e-mails asking to bring back a few blogs (Old School Box Breaks for one).  And I'm still looking for new Hobby blogs to include onto the big blogroll, glitch or no glitch.  So if you happen to have a blog about sports cards, or if you know of blogs that should be on the active roster, please send me an e-mail at bdj610@hotmail.com.  Drop me a line on twitter (@bdj610) or send me a note through Facebook (if you've friended me) and tell me if you found a new blog.  If you're the writer of a blog that hasn't been used in a while and plan on bringing it back, please feel free to do the same.  There is so much going on in the Hobby.  We need a lot of independent voices and collectors to cover it all.  Until next time.

Sincerely,

JayBee Anama

Let Me Take You Down, 'Cause I'm Going to...

I've been a very, very bad trader.

I admit it.  I'm really bad at sending packages for trading.

But it's not because of ill intent.

It's because I haven't had either time or money to trade with other collectors on a regular basis.

Cards, of course I have cards.

But finding good homes for them and the money to send them to all points around the world hasn't been easy.

Then last week, I finally got around to sending a few cards to people.

I sent both winners of my All-Star Rookie Team contest one Hobby pack each of 2011 Topps Update Series AND 2012 Topps Series 1. To Steve and Kyle, thank you for participating in the contest.

To Edgar Galvan, I apologize for the long delay in getting your cards out to you. So I hope that the Hobby packs of Topps Update Series and 2012 Topps Series 1, along with most of the cards from your wantlist arrived safely to you.

To the Night Owl, I hope that the James Loney gold card arrived to you safely.  I think I still owe you on a trade...but if not, then at least the card went to a Dodgers fan.

And finally, to Ryan Hughes (and to explain why I titled the post the way I did).  Thank you very much for holding this for me:

2011 Topps Update Series Darryl Strawberry #US238B.

I can only assume that the package of cards I sent to you arrived safely.  I am glad that the 1996 Cal Ripken Score card I sent to you found a good home in your collection.  Thank you very much for the Strawberry card.  What a picture on the Darryl here.  He was one of the reasons I would be nervous whenever the Cubs took on the Mets when I first started watching baseball.  He could beat you in so many ways (home runs seemed to do it against the Cubbies).

That's one more card from the growing list of SP's that I need for my collection.  I am sorry for the long delays in sending out everything.  But better late than never, I guess.  Thank you all for your patience.

Sincerely,

JayBee Anama

Making Up for Lost Time

For those wondering why the posts suddenly stopped, I have a very good explanation:

Our computer was infected with a virus. (cue ominous music...dun dun dunnnnnnnnnn)

It was one of those things were the program hid all of our files, shortcuts, and everything and then started sending messages like "your OS is failing" or "your hard drive is going to crash due to memory loss". Worse was the "click here to scan." When you do, this thing called System Check, which looks like something from Microsoft (but it's NOT) started "scanning" for errors, "found" sixteen, "fixed" seven of them, and suggested that if I wanted to fix the other nine, I had to "buy this program."

Red Flag!!!

Already something was fishy.

Then when I tried to close the program, it wouldn't. At that point I knew we had a virus. But that was Friday.

It's just that on Tuesday, I didn't know what was happening. So I turned off the computer. Unfortunately after shutting down the computer, it would not reboot. Some file was missing or corrupted and Windows would not start.

Thanks to Kevin, a friend of mine who knows his way around computers and even built our now disabled computer, we were able to log in. But because of concerns about our hard drive, he suggested to keep the computer off.

On Friday, I had a hunch that something else could be happening. All that stuff I mentioned earlier happened, leading me to believe our computer was infected.

But how was I going to get online if this trojan horse hid all of our files? Thank you Google Desktop. The programs that appear on the bottom right of the desktop (we still use xp) were not affected and once I knew that our files were still safe, I started to search for a site that could clear out the System Check virus. It is a relatively new virus as the website I found had only four comments, first from January 10. Following the steps, including a download of a free program (paying would give more features...didn't need them), allowed me to find and erase all traces of System Check.

On Saturday, Kevin came back and after taking apart the computer, gave it a thorough cleaning (admittedly, he said ours was relatively clean on the inside), installed more ram to our computer. I tested it last night. Our computer is now fast. Not Tony Campana fast (hey, needed to reference baseball somehow), but faster than what my family is used to with this machine.

So there you have it. The Random Card of the Day posts will be done today, and I have six or seven blogs to add to the Sports Card Blogroll. I have a lot of catching up to do.

Sincerely,

JayBee Anama

We Now Return to Our Previous Programming

Sorry that Pack Break Week was cut off.  Legitimate reason for the absence this time but I won't get into it.  I just want to send a quick let whatever readers I have left know that Pack Break Week will resume this evening with the pack of 2011 Topps Attax.

Until next time.

Top Ten Things I've Been Doing When Not Blogging...

It's almost the end of August, and this post that you've decided to read is the eighth post I've written this month.  And for anyone that is still making his or her way to this blog, I apologize for the lack of posts.  Between vacation (the pictures are still on the front page), and work, and adjusting to the kids going to TWO schools (my daughter is now in middle school...sigh...), the blog has taken a bit of a backseat to life.

It happens to the best of us.  I can use the season that my NL Chicago team has been having as the reason why I've lacked any kind of motivation to follow what's been happening in both MLB and the Hobby.  I knew that this wasn't going to be the year, but until that good run in the first half of August, it's been a bitter pill to swallow watching them play this year.  But by the time I create my post for the End of the Year All-Star Teams, even with as poorly as they've been playing, there will most likely be more than one Cub named to the team.  Chicago Bias?  Perhaps.  But I've been doing some analyzing of stats going into September, and compared to players in similar positions, the Cubs will not be a team with one player being named.  That team on the other side haven't been much to hoot and holler about either.  But there is still a month to play, so anything goes.

So I thought that now is a good time to review what it is exactly I've been up to so I can justify not writing as much as I said I would.  Here is a Top Ten List, from the home office in Des Plaines, IL:
  • 10.  Mowing my lawn.  I know that the weather has been crazy lately in the east coast, but here in the suburbs of Chicago, we've had record heat, record rains, and my lawn has experienced record growth.  I only have time to mow the lawn on the weekends (so don't get on me about during the week). But when I'm free to mow, it rains.  The ground becomes too wet, and my lawn mower (bless it's little engine) clogs and dies when the ground/grass is wet.  Then, when I have other things to do, the sun is out, the ground/grass is dry, and I'm not home to mow.
  • 9.  Vacation.  Did I mention that I went to the Dells of Wisconsin? And did I also mention that pictures are most likely on the first page of this blog?
  • 8.  Work. It's been busy.  And I won't get into that here.  I am grateful for the job I have and this is not the place to discuss it.
  • 7.  Housework.  I'm actually starting to take time and clean up the table that's been full of cards, boxes, penny sleeves, top loaders, books, team bags, magazines, and other things that my better half calls "junk."  Then again, she has her craft supplies, beautician supplies, and other supplies all over the place too.  Add my kids toys, video games (Zelda is still being played...will get to that shortly), and the house has that "lived-in" look.  I wouldn't consider this house a disaster area (it certainly isn't going to make an appearance on "Hoarders"), but at least we have a place for us and our belongings.
  • 6.  Meeting the neighbors.  We've had new neighbors since last fall, and we never got around to introducing ourselves to them until these last two months.  And I think we've spoken to them more in the last three days than we have in the last nine months.  They're really nice.  And they make killer barbecue.
  • 5.  Video Games.  We've finally completed The Legend of Zelda:  The Wind Waker and are now playing it again, just for kicks, the Gallery (take pictures of EVERYBODY, and some guy makes statues), and we're just going around looking for Triforce pieces.  We're even doing things this second time around that we didn't do before.  So it's been a bit more fun to explore the game.  But it's been taking a lot of time out of the day.  And now that the kids are back in school, the rule of "No Video Games until the Weekend" is back and being enforced.
  • 4.  Delivering Doughnuts.  I may have mentioned before that my family just bought an established doughnut shop back in June.  And while I'm not an actual employee of the place, I did get conned into helping my dad deliver the fried/baked goodies to gas stations and supermarkets.  I say "conned" because the phone call I got said "accompany dad to a delivery in (name of town here)."  What I thought was going to be a three hour trip turned into a nine hour run all over the western suburbs.  I thank my dad for the trip...I don't get to hang out with him enough...but I had a few choice words for my brother (the guy that thought I would make a good navigator).
  • 3.  Rediscovering cards that are NOT in my official collection.  The number on the sidebar includes cards I have in my binders on my bookshelfs of completed sets and inserts.  If I were to add all the other cards in my collection, we'd be just shy of 100,000 cards.  This fall and off-season, I plan on getting back into the trading business.  Whether it's on the good old Topps Message Boards (which by the way, I just found out that although the boards as I knew are gone, the eTopps boards that replaced them now has its own non eTopps Baseball Message Board.  This seems to be where all the guys and gals from the old place are now hanging out.  I've visited, not yet posted anything.  But it's starting to feel like home), or on other blogs (yes, I'm going to start looking into the want lists of other bloggers to see if I have anything they need in exchange for what I want.  The Hobby Blogging Community as a group is very generous when it comes to trading.  And I realized that many of the new blogs (which you can find on the Sports Card Blogroll), trade with each other.  They don't put a certain Topps Baseball Card Blog on their sidebar (okay Ego, that's enough), so I figure introduce myself and who knows.
  • 2.  Twitter.  If I'm not blogging, you can find me on the 140 character or less posting site (@bdj610 if you want to follow me).
  • 1.  Getting Ready for 2011 Topps Update Series and 2012 Topps!!!  You've seen the sell sheets. Let the hype begin.
I did have things to say about my trip to the National, the upcoming 2012 Topps product, more of the now almost-out-of-time 2011 Topps Archives Project, the Topps 300 site, and more.  I even want to get my 2010 All-Star Game simulation in soon.  Maybe even do the 2011 Topps card back tributes again.  And maybe fire up the Randomizer again.

Or maybe all that can wait until September (kidding...am I???)

Sincerely,

JayBee Anama

Maybe It Wasn't Such a Good Idea to Keep These Cards a Surprise

A few weeks back, I mentioned the MLB Network and Topps' joint promotion called Prime 9.  To review, check here.  If you don't want to click on the link and want a cliff notes version of the premise and rules of this promotion, here goes:

Starting July 18, the MLB Network will announce the Prime 9 subject for the week. Ideally, the identities of the subjects being chosen will be kept a secret until the announcement. The subject could be an active player, could be a legend, nobody knows for sure. But the key is that there will be one player per position!!!

Now collectors with these cards can bring the cards, after each announcement is made of course, to their nearby HTA store and the store, if participating properly, will reward him or her with a Prime 9 chrome refractor card. Each card that is submitted will enroll collectors in a sweepstakes. The grand prizes (2 of them) include either a trip to the World Series, or a trip to the MLB Network to meet and greet the talent. Other prizes will be announced later.

Emphasis on the words "if participating properly."  Because the cards were shipped to the HTA stores this week.  And guess what showed up on the 'Bay not soon afterwards:

No, not these...

THESE!!!

There goes the surprise. (Picture from one of the handful of auctions found on the Bay).

I think it would have been a better idea to have these cards redeemed online (like the Red Hot Rookie promotion from the last three years) instead of having them redeemed at the local HTA store.  Because if you're expecting people in the Hobby to keep things secret, that will never, ever happen.  Not with the Internet anyway.

Now that the element of surprise is gone...at least the player selection is good.  Can't go wrong with a 1-9 lineup like what you see above.

Sincerely,

JayBee Anama

Department of Accuracy Calling...

On my previous post regarding the All-Star Rosters, I realized that I had some faulty information (and in some instances lack of information) regarding players who were selected by Ron Washington and Bruce Bochy to fill out each team.  I redid the post and sent it, deleted the original post through my phone (since I can't make any edits online at the moment), and then found out that somebody had commented on my original post.

So to Ryan G, I apologize.  The attached picture is a screen capture of his original comment.

Sincerely,

I Blame The Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker for My Lack of Posts!!!

Nine days.

NINE DAYS!!!

If you're wondering where I've been (isn't there anybody out there wondering where I've been??? Ego, hush), about a month or so ago, my brother-in-law gave us a few more Nintendo Gamecube games. Two of them. Super Mario Sunshine, and The Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker.

Let me give you a bit of background first.

Understand that my family (meaning me, my wife, and my kids) has always been technologically behind the rest of the world. We didn't get our first DVD player until 2003 or 2004. We don't have .MP3 players (well, we did have one, then we kinda destroyed it). So when it comes to video games, we have a Playstation (not 2 or PS3... has that even come out yet???) and a Nintendo GameCube.

And that's it.

This doesn't include the Nintendo DS my kids have...but even that supposedly is now out of date.

Anyway, up until now, we never had any role-playing games. We have the Mario Kart Double Dash and Mario Party 4, and a couple of sports games. Since we bought a disc to save our progress, my kids and I have been hitting the games during the weekends, and are now one car away (the gold one) from finishing the Mario Kart Double Dash (we've unlocked EVERYTHING ELSE) and are playing the story mode in Mario Party (we've unlocked the Bowser Board and every game possible).

But now we have The Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker. I was never a fan of the Zelda games. Too much work, and I was never good at the games. However, thanks to the Internet, we found walkthroughs. For the video game challenged, walkthroughs are notes about how to play the game...IN FULL DETAIL. Where you should go, what weapons to use, where to find the treasures...it's all there. And my daughter and I have been following along on this game (which has really nice graphics), and now both of us are about a triforce away from facing the final villain of the story.

But the problem I have is that it's taken me away from this humble little blog. And I've been losing sleep because every time I play the game (whether it's on my profile or my daughter's...yes I play for her too as long as she's there), I wind up staying awake until 2:00 in the morning. And I wasn't even on the computer yet. So short of me risking my job and staying up all night. I go to bed, and then realize that I didn't even do anything for the blog.

And I say to myself...there's always this evening.

And I wind up playing the video game again.

And the cycle continues.

Well, now that the heavy part of the game is done, and all I'm doing now is just picking up maps and finding treasure chests (because that's what you do in this game when you're not beating the tar out of the monsters that are in the dungeons you explore), I will take a break from the all night gaming and come back to my blog and my dwindling readership.

So let's start off with a few things that I have been actually doing in between the gaming sessions.

If you follow me on twitter (@bdj610), you would know that I now have my master set of 2011 Topps Series 2. I just need eight more giveaway cards, and if Toys R Us is continuing their exclusive, the Purple Diamonds, I need those too. But I do have a complaint, which now that I have the full set, will be able to elaborate further on the blog.

I am also looking forward to the launch of the self proclaimed "Premier Sports Card Industry Blog." The thing is that they're supposed to be coming in July, 2011, and they've had this slogan since the site first appeared in March. All they've done since I've been aware of them is insult Gellman at SCU and then nothing for the last three months on twitter. I sent them an e-mail asking what they were about and have not gotten a response. And this was almost a month ago. So now, we wait. Will the meet or exceed the expectations they put upon themselves? Or will they crash and burn? July comes on Friday, folks. We shall wait and see.

Also this month, my daughter was in two dance shows. On consecutive Sundays, she performed in two shows (a noon matinee, and a five o'clock evening recital). Both Sundays, I was able to sneak off to Target and buy some Topps products from the local Target. On the second Sunday, I bought one of those four-pack hanger packs, with the bonus Diamond Giveaway card. The good news is that Topps has figured out a way to hide the back of the code card with an extra blank card so that you can't figure out the code on the back and thus nab a code for free without having to buy the product. In amongst the four pack of cards, included the following inserts:
  • Two Diamond parallels (Justin Smoak and Juan Miranda)
  • One Kimball Champion mini (Cal Ripken, Jr.)
  • One 60 Years of Topps (Eddie Murray...the regular one, not the original back)
  • One Topps Gold card (Sean Rodriguez)
  • One Topps 60 Card (Roy Campanella)
  • One ToppsTown Card (Carl Crawford...weren't these things supposed to be one per pack???)
And This!!!

2011 Topps Jim Palmer SP #393.

Tomorrow, we'll update the Sports Card Blogroll.  And welcome the first day of July with the return of the Random Topps Card of the Day.  On HOF Induction Day, we will also mark the return of the 2011 Topps Archives Project, starting with the newest inductee.

So my apologies for not posting in quite some time. Now it's off to Hyrule and sail the oceans once again.

Sincerely,

JayBee Anama

To the Winners of the All-Star Rookie Contest

Just a heads up to the eight winners of my All-Star Rookie Team contest that I didn't forget you guys and that after finding a card shop that was STILL OPEN (Dean's Dugout...you will be missed), I was finally able to acquire and mail out your prizes.

Not only will there be the hobby packs of 2010 Topps Update series like I promised, but also packs of 2011 Topps Series 1 included (one pack of each out your way).

I'm sorry it took this long, but I was in a bit of shock when I drove to the closest shop by me only to find the place empty. So thanks to Jim at Sports & Gaming Cards at Golf Mill Center in Niles, IL, for the packs and the latest scoop on the local hobby scene.

Sincerely,

JayBee Anama

Another "Where Have I Been??!" Post and What's Coming Up in September.

Yes, work has been completely hectic, and so has my home life. I am still a week behind on the Random Card of the Day posts, but that's neither here nor there.

I finally bought one of those Walmart exclusive boxes (the ones with the 40% more value added) last Friday, and had a wonderful conversation with Wayne who was stocking the shelves with product (no the Topps 206 was not at my store...yet). But we went over turnover and what happens to product when scumbags rip open blasters and other boxes looking for that "big hit" (it gets sent back to Topps for another attempt at repackaging) and that Walmart really doesn't care what happens when product has to be sent back (they're not losing any money here folks). Also, although the box does say Beckett Associates, the number one source in the hobby has nothing to do with the company (it's just a coincidence that the name of both companies just happens to be Beckett) and that Wayne actually doesn't work for them, he works for another distributor who is called in to stock the stuff. Walmart doesn't allow their own employees to handle the breakdown of product. A box break will be forthcoming.

Also, coming soon, a preview of the rookies who could very well be the ten selected for the 2010 Topps All-Star Rookie Team. A contest will be forthcoming, with the grand prize being a complete 150 card set of 2005 Topps Rookie Cup and other prizes to boot.

That's all for now. I'm sorry for the infrequent posts (to the point that I had less than 60 readers in one entire day!!!). As the season winds down, and the pennant races start to heat up, there should be more coming in this humble, little blog. Stay tuned.

Sincerely,

For Those Wondering Where I've Been...

I've been on vacation, and apparently did not set the Random Card of the Day posts properly while I've been out. That will be rectified this weekend. Hopefully.

When things go back to normal, here are a couple of the things I want to discuss on this humble, little blog:
  • I went to the Schaumburg Flyers/Andre Dawson & Friends Celebrity Softball game on Wednesday, and have a number of pictures to post (have to sort through the blurry ones though). While I didn't get any autographs (lines were too long, and I don't really go for that kind of thing anyway), it was fun, and I want to share some comments about it when I get back.
  • There seems to be a lot of Hobby related hatred lately. Why is that? Mike Mader, who runs the Topps Company's twitter account was hit with some criticism after he had suggested that there be some kind of forum at the National. The hatred (maybe the word is too harsh, but it's almost 3:00 in the morning, and I can't think straight right now) I've witnessed has been going on for a long time now, and it makes me wonder if there are people who really don't like what's happening in the Hobby, why even be in it??? I might be a bit naĂŻve (okay, a lot naĂŻve) when it comes to certain things related to the Hobby, but isn't what Mader is trying to suggest a good thing???
  • And to continue with the "Hobby hatred," it seems that the blogosphere is all a-twitter (get it...) with the latest box break from the number one source of the hobby...to the point that it got pretty heated (from my vantage point) on the old "140 character" site. That will be discussed as well.
  • Writing this blog has been a journey, and I received two e-mails from readers this week that I would like to share on here. Very positive stuff, not about what I write on this humble little blog, but about realizing what makes this Hobby of collecting great in general and the memories that the cards bring to people (which is kind of the point about collecting the stuff we do, isn't it???).
My vacation runs through the weekend and into the middle of next week, so I am sorry for the lack of posts lately. A lot of things have been going on (not bad at all...good things...) personally, so I've been focusing on that. Again, when life gets back to normal (depending on your definition of normal), I'll be posting again on a regular basis.

In the mean time, if you want to see the cards that the Topps Card Randomizer picked for this week, here you go:

The pictures have already been saved, it's just a matter of getting the posts in. I'll try and catch up during the vacation (which actually started last Saturday...) and be back with abandon by the middle of next week. Take care all.

A Quick Response to Bo

Bo just made a comment asking me if I knew that the Luis Castillo "Pieing" was an internet joke.

I could lie and say yes, as later research indicates that of the 15 Yankees Walk Off wins, there was no Pie in the game involving the Mets second baseman dropping the ball.

I mean think of it this way, both Burnett and Castillo were teammates with the Marlins (the same Marlins who beat these Yankees in the WS in 2003), so it's not as if they didn't know each other before. So it wouldn't have surprised me one bit if this actually happened.

But the official answer is, no, I didn't realize it was an internet joke (now I have pie in my face...go figure). But (being ever so sarcastic here mind you), don't put it past Topps to whip one up anyway (pun intended).

It is Official. It was Confirmed Before, But Now I Know for Sure that...

I am a big league dunderhead.

Thanks to commenter Brady James, not for pointing this not so new fact about myself, but because he asked if I had the Paul Molitor SP card from U & H (which by the way, I don't...), I realized that I left Molitor off not only from my wantlists (on both my last post and the wantlist on the sidebar), but also from this article.

I should really, really learn how to count. There are 25 SP's, and I only jotted down 24 on the list. When I get home tonight, I will update the above post with this little factoid:
  • #UH65 Joe Mauer, #UH65b Paul Molitor.
To answer Brady James, no, I still need the card. If you have it, please let me know. Thanks for the heads up. I'm going to go lie down now.

Sincerely,

JayBee Anama

Department of Accuracy Knocking...AGAIN!!!

In my Jim Abbott post, I wrote:

"It was disappointing not to see baseball being played at the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing..."

Thanks to commenter lwk for confirming that there actually was Olympic baseball played in Beijing and that, for now, that is the final time we will be seeing baseball as an Olympic sport in the summer games.

To be quite frank, I didn't see any baseball games at the Olympics last year. I did catch a lot of Water Polo though. That and women's weightlifting.

So again, I apologize for the error. I am not going to change what I wrote to show that I am a complete ignoramus I can be at times when I write...

Like Mr. Scatterbrain here, I have to ask, "Where is my head???"

Sincerely,

JayBee Anama
