New Year Pack Break: 2018 Topps Fire

I had this pack with me the last couple of days, but never got around to opening it. But it's Monday, a bit late in the afternoon, and I forgot to pack a lunch. Braving the elements and the single-digit temperatures, I decided to make a run to the border and splurge on Taco Bell.

I love Taco Bell. It's one of my favorite fast-food restaurants. Yes, I know there are taquerias closer to where I work, but I'm not going to walk in the cold for it, especially when time is limited. If it was a warm, sunny day (like last week), sure. But I heard the Naked Chicken Chalupa was back for a limited time, so along with a couple of Taco Supremes, and with regrets coming for sure later, I ordered one of those too.

So before I question my life choices, this is an appropriate time for another pack break. This time, it's Topps' exclusive product that can only be found at Target, 2018 Topps Fire.

The design is ridiculously busy, with the player in front of a background that looks like it is exploding behind him in red, white, and blue hues (points for patriotism, I guess). While I've seen a lot of images online, this is now a good time to see these cards up close. So what did I get in my pack of Fire???

Whoops...wrong pack.

Let's find out:

  • #37 Rickey Henderson, Athletics
  • #48 Byron Buxton, Twins
  • #86 J. D. Davis, Astros
  • #114 Cody Bellinger, Dodgers
  • #32 Ryan McMahon, Rockies
  • #C-12 Billy Hamilton Cannons, Blue Chip Parallel, Reds
  • #19 Orlando Arcia Orange Parallel 294/299, Brewers
  • #HS-1 Shohei Ohtani Hot Starts, Blue Chip Parallel, Angels
  • #21 Jake Lamb Blue Parallel, Diamondbacks
  • #10 Ryne Sandberg, Cubs
  • #84 Mike Piazza, Mets
  • #188 Johnny Bench, Reds

Thoughts:

The pack looks to have been split evenly into three categories: HOF's (Henderson, Sandberg, Piazza, Bench), current players (Buxton, Davis, Bellinger, McMahon), and inserts/parallels. At least I have a Cubs card in the pack, and it's of my favorite player EVER! So that's a win. And again, Shohei makes another appearance in a pack break.

Full of food (food was good, probably could have gone without the chalupa, although that wasn't too bad) and an open pack of cards, I probably should head back to work.

Sincerely,

JayBee Anama

New Year Pack Break: 2018 Topps Gallery

Today was a great day to be the parent of a Special Olympian.

Quick backstory:

My son has been a part of Special Olympics, representing his high school since his sophomore year. As a soph, he took home a silver medal in ramp bowling, a silver medal in the 4x100 m snowshoe relay, and a gold medal in the 100 m showshoe race. As a junior, he earned gold medals in the sectional, regional, and state Olympics in ramp bowling (you had to win gold in the sectional to get to the regional, and then win gold in the regional to get to state finals).

Today, he and his high school's Special Olympic team earned a combined 18 medals, 10 golds. My son and four of his mates will be heading to the state finals later in February to compete in the IL Winter Special Olympics.

I am very proud of my son. I find it ironic. Many years ago, when he was little and we didn't know why his development was delayed compared to his sister, his doctor actually said, "Don't expect an Olympic athlete out of him." Guess he proved the doctor wrong, huh?

So back to the point. I brought a pack of 2018 Topps Gallery with me, just in case we had some time to kill between races. Topps Gallery, or at least the last two years it has been put out into the market, has been a Walmart-exclusive product. This is similar to Topps Fire being a Target-exclusive item. I guess Topps figured out a way to expand their product catalog without hitting the Hobby wall of 17 products per year (I've lost count, but I'm pretty sure that this is correct). It's a beautifully designed set, with all of the cards looking like paintings that belong...well...you get the idea.

So what was in this 12-card pack? Will I finally...FINALLY...get a Cubs card? Here goes:

  • #102 Ian Happ, OF, Cubs
  • #74 Nick Pivetta, P, Phillies
  • #5 Christian Yelich, OF, Brewers
  • #38 Victor Robles, OF, Nationals
  • #51 Andrew McCutchen, OF, Giants
  • #116 Shohei Ohtani, P/DH, Angels
  • #H-18 Ozzie Albies Heritage, 2B, Braves
  • #123 Salvador Perez Canvas Parallel, C, Royals
  • #110 Evan Longoria Canvas Parallel, 3B, Giants
  • #46 Luis Severino, P, Yankees
  • #54 Christian Arroyo, SS, Rays
  • #84 Cal Ripken Jr., SS, Orioles

Thoughts:

First, finally, a Cubs card!!! And what a player to start the pack...the guy that started the 2018 season with a first-pitch home run.

Second, OHTANI!!!

A very good pack, in my opinion. Can't go wrong when you get both of the Giants' new acquisitions (even if McCutchen was traded off to the Yankees). What are the odds of getting two Christians in a pack (the MVP to boot). Got another Severino card, and then the Ripken at the end? Great pack.

I might have to open something from Target to balance out. Maybe a pack of Fire.

Decisions, decisions.

Sincerely,

JayBee Anama

New Year Pack Break: 2018 Topps Allen & Ginter's

Work has been crazy busy as we headed into the New Year. I may have been with the food broker for a year, but I am still figuring things out and realizing that I still have a lot to learn about this side of the specialty foods industry. Now, this does not mean that I am having a hard time. Not in the least. But as head into year two of this journey, there will be more responsibility given to me, and I am looking forward to the challenge.

With that said, the focus on doing a pack break during my lunch break is going to be a bit of a challenge as it turns out that I didn't have one (or yesterday, depending on where in the world you're in). But in between shifts, which means upon returning home, changing into my pharmacy scrubs, and heading to the part-time gig, I did have a bit of time to do a quick pack break. And what better way to spend 5 minutes than to open one of the three packs of 2018 Topps Allen & Ginter's that I bought at a Target a while back.

Need to make this quick. What was in this pack you ask?
  • #296 Taijuan Walker, P, Diamondbacks
  • #176 Claire Smith, Sportswriter
  • #268 Jose Berrios, P, Twins
  • #303 Hyun-Jin Ryu, P, Dodgers
  • #FLN-25 Corsica Flags of Lost Nations
  • #WGB-2 Bora Bora, Tahiti, World's Greatest Beaches

Quick thoughts:

Again, no Cubs cards, and only three player cards (all pitchers). But to have a card of the first woman to win the Spink Award for journalism in Claire Smith is nice. Also, as a big fan of flags (go away Sheldon), the Corsica Flag is a nice one to have. The 25-card set is nice, and the tidbit of information about what was the country of Corsica, an island that was "won by France in 1769," offers a brief snippet of it's brief history.

There is a three-card bonus pack of parallel mini cards that came with the 3-pack of A&G. I'll probably open that later. I can already see what's in the pack, so that's not going to be a surprise. But at least I'll have something to open when I'm fresh out of packs.

Sincerely,

JayBee Anama

New Year Pack Break: 2018 Topps Series 1 Jumbo Walmart

Happy New Year everyone. We are at my sister's house right now celebrating our family Christmas. The belief, my mom always says, is that your can have Christmas with your respective families, but NEW YEARS IS MINE!!! It is going to be different now that my dad is gone, but he was certainly here in spirit as prayers were made with him on our minds. It won't be the same, but we will carry on.

But in the spirit (see what I did there) of getting back into the swing of things on this humble, little blog, and before the food is served, what better time is there to do the pack break that I promised in my last post now. More people are coming in, and the tables are being spread where I am presently sitting (on the floor), so I am going to have to move to the couch.

The first pack I am opening in 2019 is from the first product of 2018, Topps Series 1. This 36-card jumbo pack came from Walmart, and should include one exclusive Kris Bryant Highlight card. Which one is in here is anybody's guess. What is inside this pack? Well...
  • #323 Elvis Andrus, SS, Rangers
  • #290 Salvador Perez, C, Royals
  • #83 Howie Kendrick, OF, Nationals
  • #311 Yulieski Gurriel, 1B, Astros
  • #117 Kendrys Morales, DH, Blue Jays
  • #140 Mookie Betts, OF, Red Sox
  • #198 Marcus Semien, SS, Athletics
  • #270 Jackie Bradley Jr., OF, Red Sox
  • #303 Luis Severino, P, Yankees
  • #273 Ozzie Albies, 2B, Braves
  • #139 Zach Davies NL League Leaders, Brewers
  • #114 Cody Bellinger NL League Leaders, Dodgers
  • #34 Luis Severino AL League Leaders, Yankees
  • #218 Khris Davis AL League Leaders, Athletics
  • #105 Daniel Murphy, 2B, Nationals
  • #305 Miguel Andujar, 3B, Yankees
  • #TS-91 Brandon Woodruff Topps Salute-Rookies, Brewers
  • #MLB-19 DJ LeMahieu NL Fielding Awards, Rockies
  • #83-63 Kenta Maeda 1983 35th Anniversary Blue Parallel, Dodgers
  • #LTM-CS Chris Sale Legends in the Making, Red Sox
  • #KB-17 Kris Bryant Highlights, Cubs
  • #167 Dansby Swanson, SS, Braves
  • #181 Garrett Cooper, 1B, Yankees
  • #271 Cam Gallagher, C, Royals
  • #307 Daniel Murphy NL League Leaders, Nationals
  • #156 Milwaukee Brewers Team Card
  • #48 Boston Red Sox Team Card
  • #219 J. P. Crawford, SS, Phillies
  • #191 Chris Archer, P, Rays
  • #243 James McCann, C, Tigers
  • #297 Kevin Kiermaier, OF, Royals
  • #232 Nate Jones, P, White Sox
  • #187 Chad Kuhl, P, Pirates
  • #310 Jason Kipnis, 2B, Indians
  • #47 Hunter Pence, OF, Giants
  • #17 Robbie Ray, P, Diamondbacks

Initial thoughts:

Lots of star power in this pack. Salvador Perez, Dansby Swanson AND Ozzie Albies, Mookie Betts AND Jackie Bradley Jr, 2 Daniel Murphy cards, 2 Luis Severino cards. This is a good pack, even without an auto or relic card.

Other than the expected KB highlight card (and it was KB-17 to boot), there were no Cubs cards, although there was at least one White Sox card.

I did start this post at my sister's. And I did actually open the above pack there. However, once the Karaoke started, I had to get out of the living room and wound up playing Mario Kart on the Nintendo Switch for the rest of the night. The pictures were taken after I got home.

But at least I have the pack breaks off to a flying start. Which pack am I going to open next? I don't know yet. It all depends on what I grab when I head back to work tomorrow.

Sincerely,

JayBee Anama

Pack Break Week: 2017 Topps Archives

How about we start 2018 off on the right foot by presenting "The Return of The Return of Pack Break Week." For those who have joined us for the first time (welcome, first of all to this humble, little blog), the concept is simple: opening packs of cards after the baseball card season ended. In this case, the packs I had bought for Pack Break Week were from the three Hobby stores I visited during National Baseball Card Day.

Now a month ago, I opened and showed off what was inside packs of 2017 Topps Series 1 and 2017 Stadium Club. Today, we'll open up a pack of 2017 Topps Archives, also known nowadays as "Topps Heritage Lite." Let me explain.

Archives as a product used to be about reprints. Reprints of cards of legendary players cards from Topps' library. The first instance of this was 1983 when Topps created a set reprinting the legendary 1952 Topps set. Sets later from the 80's and 90's honored the 1953 Topps set, the 1954 Topps set (with some help from Upper Deck), and the 1952-55 Brooklyn Dodgers. In 2001, Topps brought back the Archives product in honor of the company's 50th anniversary to their first baseball card product. The set consisted of two series, featuring the first and final cards of 200 hall-of-fame and fan favorite players. Other than the hard-to-read card numbers, it was a big hit. In 2002, Archives returned, featuring reprint cards of 200 players from his "best year." It was a good set, with easy to read numbers, but some players' best years were with a different team than what he was depicted (Andre Dawson's 1987 reprint was his Expos card, not his Cubs Topps Traded card). Topps also added the stats of that best year on the card backs. Unusual, yes. But hey, there was a point behind it.

The following three years, Topps mixed things up a bit, creating a run of cards called Topps All-Time Fan Favorites, combining Topps library of designs with never-before-seen pictures. Most of the cards made sense aesthetically, but then you had an old Tommy Lasorda on his 1954 Topps card, or a young Kirk Gibson on an 1995 Topps card. It was hit or miss on the images matching the card designs.

In 2011, now 60 years into the baseball card business, Topps introduced Topps Lineage. A unique set that featured a basic base set design that had not been used in Topps catalog. But the hook on this set were the inserts that honored Topps unique inserts: 1968 Topps 3-D, 1964 Topps Stand-Ups, 1975 Topps Minis for example. Cloth stickers, 80's designed Rookie sets, and card backs written in Spanish, honoring the 50's and 60's Topps Venezuelan sets, were also included in packs of Lineage. The product was a hit, thanks to the nostalgia factor Topps was pushing. The following year, the concept returned, but instead of Lineage, it was called...

Topps Archives.

But thanks to the MLB Properties rules, Topps could no longer create a set featuring retired players. There had to be current players as well. So instead of reprints, Topps picked 4 classic designs (in this case 1954, 1971, 1980, and 1984) and matched 50 players with each design. The insert sets once again came from Topps library of products (1977 Cloth Stickers, 1967 Stickers, 1968 3D, 1969 Deckle Edge, 1982 In-Action, and 1958 Classic Combos. There was an insert set of reprint cards that used the Archives logo. Since then, Topps has continued the Archives line, featuring 4 classic designs with their classic insert sets.

The problem:

Didn't some of these guys have Heritage cards using some of these same designs? I haven't done a study, but I'm sure if it hasn't happened yet, it will happen soon. Heritage is a product that has a strong following (not me, but I know people). To me, it just doesn't seem right.

But anyway. I do own the first two sets of this new incarnation. But for some reason, I had no interest getting the last four sets.

That was until the Derek Jeter reprint retrospective that was added to the 2017 set. Well, I did get the Jeter set, but I still have no plans to go after "Topps Heritage Lite."

On to the point (if I haven't bored you to death already...)

So what's inside this pack of 2017 Topps Archives?

Opening pack now...

Here are the eight cards that were in the pack above:
  • #60 Catfish Hunter, P, Athletics, 1960
  • #74 Corey Kluber, P, Indians, 1960
  • #206 John Lackey, P, Cubs, 1992
  • #252 Evan Gattis, C, Astros, 1992
  • #236 Braden Shipley, P, Diamondbacks, 1992
  • #45 Javier Baez, 2B, Cubs, 1960
  • #122 Willie Stargell, OF, Pirates, 1982
  • #193 Tony Clark, MLBPA Executive Director, 1982

Thoughts: Two Cubs cards. That makes up for the first two packs. No inserts, no short prints, no Jeter anything. Ehhh. You can call the Stargell card an ATFF because he does have an 1982 Topps card (could be a future "What Card is This?" subject). But still...TWO CUBS CARDS.

Tomorrow's pack will be from 2017 Topps Series 2. Want to know what's inside? Stay tuned.

Sincerely,

JayBee Anama

Pack Break Week: 2017 Topps Stadium Club

Last night saw the return of Pack Break Week with the opening of a Series 1 pack. Today's pack is fron 2017 Topps Stadium Club.

With an incredible focus on photography and a great checklist that mixes current and legendary players, Stadium Club has been a great success among Topps' catalog of products. It's also one of Topps older premium brands, dating back to 1991. Now, I have no plans on going to try and complete this set, but I do have respect for it and am curious as to what was in this pack that I bought on National Baseball Card Day.

Don't forget later this week, I will be ripping open the Noah Syndergaard Rip Card from A&G.

So what's in this pack of 2017 Topps Stadium Club?

Opening pack now...

Here are the eight cards that were contained inside the above pack:
  • #135 Jameson Taillon, P, Pirates
  • #193 Jackie Robinson, 2B, Dodgers
  • #203 Hernan Perez, 3B, Brewers
  • #110 Michael Conforto, OF, Mets
  • #216 Odubel Herrera, OF, Phillies
  • #SS-CS Chris Sale, P, Red Sox, Scoreless Streak insert
  • #297 Curtis Granderson, OF, Mets
  • #259 Adrian Beltre, 3B, Rangers

Thoughts: No Cubs, not even a White Sox player (and no, Sale doesn't count) to speak of here. All-Stars? Sure...with Conforto, Herrera, Granderson, and Beltre. The Jackie Robinson card is nice, and the picture selection doesn't disappoint. My only concern new is that with Topps' eponymous designs no longer including borders, and focusing more on photos with minimal but unique design elements, is there even a need for this kind of a set?

Tomorrow's pack will be from 2017 Topps Archives. While I am not expecting much out of Heritage Lite, maybe something good will come from it. Maybe.

Watch this space.

Sincerely,

JayBee Anama

Pack Break Week: 2017 Topps Series 1

It's the return of Pack Break Week here on this humble, little blog. The idea is to celebrate the past baseball card season while looking forward to next season. And what better way to do this then my opening packs of this year's product.

As you probably recall, I went to three different card shops during National Baseball Card Day. Along with getting my free packs of NBC cards, I also bought some random packs of Series 1 & 2 of the eponymous product, plus some packs of this year's editions of Allen & Ginter's, Archives, and Stadium Club. Along the way, 1 pack of A&G included a rip card of Noah Syndergaard. I'm going to open that card on Friday and reveal what was hidden inside of it.

In the meantime, let's open the series 1 pack and find out what was inside of it.

Opening pack now...

Here are the ten cards that were contained inside the above pack:
  • #268 Anthony Gose, OF, Tigers
  • #330 Doug Fister, P, Astros
  • #28 Rick Porcello, P, Red Sox, AL Wins Leader
  • #119 Francisco Lindor, SS, Indians
  • #S-69 Ozzie Smith, SS, Cardinals, Topps Salutes Legends insert
  • #272 Pat Neshek, P, Astros
  • #332 Huston Street, P, Angels
  • #92 Derek Norris, C, Padres
  • #259 Jose DeLeon, P, Dodgers
  • #294 Kole Calhoun, OF, Angels

Thoughts: a typical 10-card pack. Not much to write home about in terms of a wow factor (at least for the Chicagoan). Lots of West Coast teams represented in this pack, plus an insert of Ozzie Smith, as well as a card of fellow card collector Pat Neshek.

Tomorrow's pack will be from 2017 Topps Stadium Club. Will there be a special auto, relic, or short-print inside?

Stay tuned.

Sincerely,

JayBee Anama

Pack Break Week 4: 2015 Topps Allen & Ginter's

Whoops!

It looks like Pack Break Week #4 will have to be extended to this week as it has been one whirlwind weekend.

But now that the festivities are over and everyone is back at work and school (almost...), it's time to get back in gear and kick off 2016 with a bang by opening up the pack I was supposed to open on Friday, 2015 Topps Allen & Ginter's.

In it's 10th successful campaign, Topps Allen & Ginter's World Champions continues combining the world of sports with, well, everything else. Non baseball card subjects included the four guys who try to out-do each other on Impractical Jokers, the Appomattox Court House, the Magna Carta, and the four "characters" from the Rocky movies (not the actors who portrayed them). Unique insert sets, whether they are the standard 2½ x 3½ inch or the mini cards which were the size of the original cards that would have been inserted in tobacco products, round out this incredible product.

Now, there are collectors out there who even after 10 years of exposure to A&G still don't get the concept and complain about all of these extra subjects in their baseball cards. They're missing the point of the set. This is not just a baseball card product, but it pays homage to all the unique and crazy subjects that the original Allen & Ginter's produced in the 19th century.

So what cards did I manage to get in my six-card pack of A&G? On the 10th Anniversary, this was what was inside:

  • #47 Lance Lynn, Cardinals
  • #19 Charlie Blackmon, Rockies
  • #AA-5 Chu Ko Nu, Ancient Armory insert
  • #262 Alex Cobb, Rays, Mini card
  • #323 Joaquin Benoit, Padres
  • #99 Edwin Escobar, Red Sox

Other than the nice insert card, this one joins the Stadium Club pack as a downer. Don't get me wrong, the base design is nice, and yes, there are a couple of All-Stars in the pack. But for this Cubs fan, it's nothing to write home about.

Here's hoping that the 2015 Topps Update Series pack that I plan on opening tomorrow comes up with something nice. And while we're at it, I might as well open the final pack from the dollar store, 2014 Topps Update Series. Should be interesting to say the least.

Have a great day everyone.

Sincerely,

JayBee Anama

Pack Break Week 4: 2015 Topps Stadium Club

Just realized that I had this ready to go and for some reason it did not publish. I apologize for the delay.

Before we run out to celebrate my sister's birthday (she was born on New Year's Eve), I better get this post for Pack Break Week going. I'm kind of excited by this.

Stadium Club is a product that focuses primarily on photography. It was Topps' first real attempt at unbordered cards, which meant other than a little spot on the card for a design element, you were getting full bleed photographs on little pieces of cardboard. The pictures were sharp, really bringing you close to the action of the ballgame.

After a long run, Topps ended the series, much to the dismay of many collectors who loved the product. Topps did bring it back, but the way it was presented and distributed was a disappointment. After a year hiatus, it came back, and needless to say, it looks like it's here to stay. For how long? Who knows.

This year's edition of Stadium Club not only features the usual sharp photography, but a number of shots that feature some of the lighter side of baseball. To wit, there is a card of HOF pitcher Dennis Eckersley with his racing mascot with the Oakland A's. Also in a tribute to Hobby bloggers everywhere, Bip Roberts was added to the set, wearing a sombrero. I am actually hoping right now that I get either one of these cards in this pack. Of course, getting a SP Kris Bryant card would be great as well.

So what did come out of this pack of 2015 Topps Stadium Club? Here goes:

  • #49 Kurt Suzuki, C, Twins
  • #244 Daniel Norris, P, Blue Jays
  • #214 Brandon Crawford, 2B, Giants
  • #98 Jim Rice, OF, Red Sox
  • #80 Andrew Heaney, P, Angels

In a word...disappointment.

So much for a good pack. Don't get me wrong, the pictures are nice. Love the shot of Crawford in mid-air. But no Cubs, no Bip? Not the greatest pack in the world. Too bad they only put 5 cards in this pack. There should have been more cards. A 5 card pack in today's world should only be sold at a dollar store. I think this pack should have been sold at a dollar store...for less than a penny.

Maybe tomorrow's pack, the 2015 Topps Allen & Ginter's, will be better.

To everyone who is still here reading this humble, little blog, I wish you a very Happy New Year.

So let's get to it:

Goodbye 2015!!!

Hello 2016!!!

Goodbye 2015 Topps Design!!!

Hello 2016 Topps Design!!!

May all your collections grow to new heights. Let's hope Topps makes it a bit easier on us insane set collectors (they probably won't but it's nice to dream.) Thank you for letting me into your computers this past year. I hope to be able to share more of my collection with you in 2016!!!

Sincerely,

JayBee Anama

Pack Break Week 4: 2015 Topps Series 2

It's almost the end of the year, and I've written more posts on this humble little blog in the last few days than I have for some months. How's that for new-found commitment to writing? But remember, it's not about the quantity of posts, it's the quality. And I am hoping for more of the quality...even if it means sacrificing on the quantity.

So what are we waiting for? Let's get to today's pack break!!!

As it's Wednesday, why not have a two-for-one pack break. Not only am I opening a pack of 2015 Topps Series 2, but I'll also open a pack from my son's haul from the Dollar Tree, a 5-card pack of 2013 Topps Series 2.

If the 2015 Topps Series 2 set is going to be known for one card...it's going to be card #616 Kris Bryant. Did you know that the Cubs wunderkind, and 2015 NL Rookie of the Year, wasn't even supposed to be in this set? It's true. Take a look at the checklist:

So who's Curt Casali? He's a catcher for the Tampa Bay Rays who has appeared in 68 games in a two season MLB career. In 2014, he appeared in 30 games, and as he made his MLB debut on July 18, 2014, was more than eligible to be in Topps' eponymous set.

But as 2015 Spring Training came along, and Bryant was just crushing it, there was rampant speculation that the Cubs would have him in the majors some time that season. Of course, Topps couldn't include him in their MLB products until he did make his debut, (which is why he didn't appear in the Gypsy Queen product and other early releases). And unless you wanted another #661 debacle - or would it be #662 - (see Stephen Strasburg in 2010 and Bryce Harper in 2012), he HAD to be in the main set somewhere. So when Bryant did finally arrive, making him "Rookie Card" eligible (complete with the Rookie Card logo), guess who got bumped?

For the record, Casali does have some baseball cards. He is among the subjects in the 2014 Bowman Platinum Prospect Autograph set, and all of the corresponding parallels and printing plates. But short of a 2014 Durham Bulls Minor League team set, that's it for the cardboard love. Here's hoping that he gets that card in 2016 Topps.

So short of a miracle (it would be nice to say that I opened a pack with a Kris Bryant card in it. I opened so many without one), and while the Bulls are playing the Pacers, let's see what I did get in my pack of 2015 Topps Series II?

  • #497 Hunter Strickland, P, Giants
  • #484 Melvin Mercedes, P, Tigers
  • #640 Matt Clark, 1B, Brewers
  • #701 Milwaukee Brewers Team Card
  • #669 Tampa Bay Rays Team Card
  • #616 Kris Bryant, 3B, Cubs

Wait...

WHAT??!

You mean I actually pulled the Bryant card??! Forget the rest. This pack was a clear winner!!!

That's it. Calling it a night now. Thanks for watching...

Might as well see what came after Bryant, huh?

  • #362 Jason Bourgeois, OF, Reds
  • #H-39 Bobby Doerr, 2B, Red Sox Highlight of the Year 1944
  • #412 Hector Rondon, P, Cubs
  • #430 Jarred Cosart, P, Marlins
  • #369 Aaron Loup, P, Blue Jays
  • #463 Justin Verlander, P, Tigers

Did I mention Kris Bryant??! Okay, calming myself down here.

How about that? Two Cubs cards, and Verlander, another superstar, to finish the pack? Other than the fact that I got four Rookie Card eligible players in the first six cards, this pack was worth it.

At this point, anything that I get from this 2013 pack is just extra. Probably the best pack I've opened so far.

Here's what was in that pack of 2013 Topps Series 2:

  • #614 B. J. Upton, OF, Braves
  • #343 Alex Avila, C, Tigers
  • #384 Jake McGee, P, Rays
  • #425 Josh Donaldson, 3B, Athletics
  • #438 Yasmani Grandal, C, Padres

Not a bad five-card pack. Bossman Jr (or does he go by Melvin now?) and the Bringer of Rain before he became an MVP? Works for me.

That will do it for tonight. It's New Year's Eve tomorrow. Other than the usual month-end stuff at work, I have to focus on year-end stuff as well. Hope you enjoyed this evening's edition of Pack Break Week. Tomorrow, I'll open a pack of cards from a product I didn't think I'd ever open, 2015 Topps Stadium Club. What will be in it? Wait and see.

Sincerely,

JayBee Anama

Pack Break Week 4: 2015 Topps Gypsy Queen

Before it becomes "Taco Night" at home, it was just another ordinary day. The kids are still home on break, playing on their computers or whatever they do while I'm at work. My wife is baking cookies (made these really good peanut butter cookies last night and trying something different today). I'm just keeping up with the work before the end-of-the-year.

And I have all of these packs of cards at my desk waiting to be opened. Tempted as I have been, I've held off. Not because it's busy as usual, but I want to see what I get just before I write my post for pack break week.

Today's pack break features the 2015 Topps Gypsy Queen. Now in it's fifth incarnation, this year's design of the Gypsy Queen is truly a Topps original as I can't seem to find anything that remotely comes close to this in similarity. But that's not a bad thing. The concept is still the same. A mix of current and retired players with a unique cardboard stock and pictures filtered to look like paintings than actual photos. The dark borders in this year's set are prone can be prone to chipping, but they hold well based on the thickness of the cardboard. What makes it even more interesting is that the players by their last names first (Rizzo, A., Cubs for example) on the front and there are no statistics on the back, just a quick bio. Now, if you're not familiar with the name of the player based on the lack of info on the front, his full name is on the back.

So, what came out of this pack of 2015 Topps Gypsy Queen?

  • #40 Jorge Soler, Cubs
  • #200 Mike Napoli, Red sox
  • #196 Travis d'Arnaud, Mets
  • #82 Evan Gattis, Braves
  • #105 Billy Hamilton, Reds

  • #165 Michael Brantley, Indians
  • #GWO-21 Kolton Wong, Cardinals, Walk-Off Winners
  • #BBMR-7 Tag Up, Basics of Baseball Mini Card
  • #263 Mark Buehrle, Blue Jays
  • #260 Babe Ruth, Yankees

Some positives include a Cubs card (Soler) and my second Evan Gattis card in two days (also got one in my S1 pack yesterday). A rare mini insert card (1:24 packs) now makes me curious as to how much it would cost to get the whole set. Be right back...Okay. So while there are no full sets online, single cards go anywhere from $2.50 to $4.00. I might take a stab at it as it does look interesting. Or I just might throw it on the Bay.

A star name closes out the pack for the third day straight (Ruth). So overall, a good pack.

Tomorrow's pack break features Series 2 of the eponymous set. And a bonus 5-card pack of 2013 Topps Series 2. Should be a good one. Want to know what's in here? Come back tomorrow.

Sincerely,

JayBee Anama

Pack Break Week 4: 2015 Topps Series 1

It's a cold night here as winter has "finally" arrived. But instead of light snowflakes slowly reaching the ground, it's ice. Coming down real fast. It's surprisingly deep out now, but it's so heavy, it would be ridiculous to try and shovel. Snow blowing isn't going to do much either.

So after winding down with a non-alcoholic version of linguine with clam sauce (long story...but the last time I made this at home, it involved way too much white wine in the sauce), now is the perfect opportunity to begin what I hope is a pretty good Pack Break Week.

This Christmas, I received a lot of packs of different products. For tonight's pack break(it would have been a "today's pack break," but you know...work...), why not open the product that started the 2015 baseball card season, Topps Series 1. Seeing all of the images on the screen were nice and all, but it was until I got to see the cards up close that I really started to like the design elements of this set. The colored borders, very light use of foil (only on their logo and the words "Future Star" on those cards that needed it), pictures were great. What was not to love?

Okay, on to the cards. What came out of this pack of 2015 Topps Series 1?

  • #63 Chris Owings, SS, Diamondbacks, Future Stars
  • #350 Yasiel Puig, OF, Dodgers
  • #43 Starlin Castro, SS, Cubs
  • #298 Rymer Liriano, OF, Padres
  • #106 Pedro Alvarez, 3B, Pirates
  • #314 Jackie Bradley Jr., OF, Red Sox

  • #318 George Springer, OF, Astros, Topps Gold #0636/2015
  • #A-23 Willie Mays, OF, Giants, Archetypes
  • #327 Xander Bogaerts, SS, Red Sox
  • #273 Brandon Hicks, 2B, Giants
  • #58 Evan Gattis, C, Braves, Future Star
  • #207 Bryce Harper, OF, Nationals

Decent pack for S1. Four Future Stars, two players from 2014's Topps ASRT, and a Topps Gold card!!! You can see the details of the border a lot more on the gold and black parallel cards than you can with the base. Then you have the fact that there's a Cubs card (Castro), and Hobby darlings Yasiel Puig and Bryce Harper? It's a win.

I'm going to miss Starlin. He was the face of the franchise during the really hard years (and yes, there were really hard years). He debuted like nobody else, and I wish him well in NY.

So Pack Break week went off without a hitch. Here's to hoping I can get the rest of these out earlier. I guess better late then never, right? Tomorrow, I'll open the pack of 2015 Topps Gypsy Queen. What's waiting for me inside the pack? Stay tuned and we'll find out together.

Sincerely,

JayBee Anama

Pack Break Week 4: 2013 Topps Update Series

I love Pack Break Week!

It's one of the only times of the year that I get to open a ton of packs from different products and post them on the blog. In past years, I would go to the local big box store and buy a pack of random products (okay, products that I actually like). This year, they're from Christmas presents. So no money was spent, but lots of excitement ahead.

Now I'd call this a preview of what to expect when I open the big stuff during the week. Here now, is one of the penny packs that my son was able to purchase from the Dollar Tree:

This is what came out of the 2013 Topps Update Series pack:

  • #US293 Robinson Cano, 2B, Yankees, Home Run Derby
  • #US177 David Ortiz, DH, Red Sox, Season Highlights (Checklist)
  • #US249 Madison Bumgarner, P, Giants, NL All-Star
  • #US142 Yadier Molina, C, Cardinals, NL All-Star
  • #US59 Hisashi Iwakuma, P, Mariners, AL All-Star

No base cards, all subsets. Three All-Stars, a Home Run Derby card, and Big Papi? Not a bad pack to start what should be a very interesting week to close out what has been a somewhat "Blah" year on the blog. I'm looking forward to see what comes next. I hope you (whoever left of you is still here reading this) are too.

Sincerely,

JayBee Anama

Christmas...It Was a Good Day

Last year, my son went to the Dollar Tree. You might remember this story. If you don't plan on clicking the link, let me give you the Cliff Notes version:

He and his classmates went to the local dollar store to buy Christmas gifts for their families. You may have heard that people were finding packs at the store for a penny at the Dollar Tree. These aren't the regular packs you'd see at your big box store or Hobby shop. These were 5-card packs, almost all base cards, with the occasional short print.

Anyway, my son bought a pack of 2013 Topps Series 1. That was it. For a penny. Which was fine, and the cards were all base...but he was supposed to spend a dollar. He could have bought a hundred of these things (if they had enough). But beggars can't be choosers, and it's what I asked for (one pack of Topps cards), so he got what was on the list.

This year, he and his class once again made the trip.

He made out like a bandit:

Not only did he spend his allotted dollar on my present on the 2015 Topps Series 2 pack, but he also got me three other three packs (2013 Series 2, 2013 Update, 2014 Update) for a penny each.

Cue the music!!! Sing along if you want!!!:

So what did I get in my Christmas Day packs:

The 2015 Topps Series 2 contained:

  • #522 Sam Tuivailala, P, Cardinals
  • #434 Carlos Frias, P, Dodgers
  • #661 Grant Balfour, P, Rays
  • #568 Chris Tillman, P, Orioles
  • #600 Albert Pujols, 1B, Angels

Two rookie cards, two All-Stars, one of which is future HOF Pujols? This was a great pick.

Now, the other three I haven't opened yet. I'm curious about them too.

Maybe...just maybe...

Why not!!!

Let's end the year with a Pack Break Week!!! Stay tuned!!!

Sincerely,

JayBee Anama

Pack Break Week 2013: Topps Update Series and Topps Chrome Update Series

(For some reason, this post did not get published as scheduled last Sunday. Then, it got lost in the shuffle. I apologize for that. This is what should have concluded last week's Pack Break Week on Sunday, November 10.)

Sunday. It's the Day of Rest. And before Mass begins, the kids are at CCD. My daughter has a dance rehearsal, so we're going to be rushing it from church to home so she can get ready. Then there's the matter of raking leaves in the front yard...

You know, now would be the ideal time to finish off Pack Break Week.

To conclude Pack Break Week, I will now be opening the pack of 2013 Topps Update Series and the second pack of 2013 Topps Chrome Update Series found exclusively in those Mega Boxes found at the big box store..

Enclosed, in order, is what appeared in my 12-card pack of Topps Update Series:

  • #US25 Wade Davis, Royals
  • #US81 Casey Kotchman, Marlins
  • #US165 A. J. Pierzynski, Rangers
  • #US147 Charlie Morton, Pirates
  • #US200 Wil Myers, Rays
  • #US218 Miguel Cabrera, American League All-Star

  • #US106 Clayton Kershaw, National League All-Star Gold #0601/2013
  • #TM-4 Bo Jackson, Royals, 1971 Mini Card
  • #US260 Darren O'Day, Orioles
  • #US299 Ian Kennedy, Padres
  • #US183 Jeff Bianch, Brewers RC
  • #US92 Jeanmar Gomez, Pirates

Getting the gold card of a guy who should win this year's 2013 Cy Young is great. I know there's going to be demand somewhere in the Hobby Blogging Community for it (unless somebody already has given it to that person already). The Bo Jackson card is nice too. Surprised that the corners haven't been dinged...the paper quality seems to have improved over the years (at least what was used in 1971).

Now onto the Chrome Update Series pack (carefully peeling it for Baseball Dad):

  • #MB-38 Kyle Gibson, Twins
  • #MB-28 Rafael Soriano, Nationals
  • #MB-22 Ian Kennedy, Padres
  • #PH-6 Sandy Koufax, Dodgers Postseason Heroes

I guess the "MB" stands for "Mega Box." Cool, so not only did I break a pack with Ian Kennedy's regular Update card in it, but the Chrome pack had his Chrome card too. WOOT for coincidences. I also realized that not only do I have the Gold parallel of Kershaw's Update card, but his Gold Chipz too (from earlier in the week...must be a sign). Getting a chrome insert is nice, but I totally whiffed on the parallels on my two packs. Que sera sera.

I hoped you enjoyed this year's edition of Pack Break Week. I hope 2014 will bring us great things to talk about and good packs to rip.

Sincerely,

JayBee Anama
