The Final and Official Post about the 2013 Topps 17-Card Team Sets.

Back in January, I posted the preliminary checklists for all 32 of the 17-card team sets that Topps was going to come out with after the 2013 season would commence. Needless to say, lots of roster changes happened after the 11th of January, and in the middle of April, the new team sets were popping up in stores and Internet sites everywhere. The source I use for pictures (really good pictures) had 29 of the 30 teams' sets up on their site (once again, the Padres were the lone hold out, which was the reason why my 2011 post ran so late).

But since then, two developments occurred that is allowing me to write this post. The first was that the site has finally added the Padres team set to their site (I'll get to the second development after this long post...it will be long...trust me).

For those who don't know why I obsess over these sets (like the Random Team Set of the Week posts weren't enough), here is a "brief" background of my history with the sets:

Since 2006, as a way to bring kids back to the Hobby, Topps began issuing Team Sets for each of the 30 MLB teams. And they could be found EVERYWHERE!!! From big box stores like Target and WalMart, to your local Supermarket, these blister packed sets contained at least 14 cards of your local team's heroes. No leafing through pack after pack to get cards of the team you root for, it's all here in easy-to-carry-to-the-register-package.

While many cards had pictures similar to those found in the 2006 base set, there were a number of cards of players who were pictured in different uniforms, had different pictures than what was used in the base set (photoshop was used in more than one instance), or players who were left of the base set included, meaning that they were only found in these retail only sets. These must have sold very well because in 2007 and 2008, these 14-card packages returned to store shelves. In 2009, a bonus 15th card was added to each of the sets. These bonus cards could have been of the stadium, the manager, the team mascot, a bonus player, or even a President or two. In 2010, two more cards were added to the blister packs, so each set contained an astounding 17 cards. In 2011, Topps introduced AL and NL All-Star Team Sets ;along with the 30 team sets. Of course I had to get those as well.

For the record, I have been insane enough to buy not just one set, or even two. I have bought ALL 30 TEAM SETS for the last SEVEN YEARS (plus the two All-Star Sets from 2011 AND 2012).That's 214 team sets, roughly 3308 cards total, that I have added to my collection. What can I say, I wanted to collect them all...

Without further ado, here are the final checklists for all 32 team sets (including the All-Star sets):

A few thoughts:
  • It turns out that it is the Athletics and Cardinals (not the Phillies) that will not include a card of the stadium (opting to include Coco Crisp and Matt Carpenter respectively as their card #17.
  • Pablo Sandoval and Craig Kimbrel replace David Freese and Matt Holliday on the NL All-Stars team set. This also means that the NL has the lone relief pitcher on either set. Somehow the Cardinals get the shaft on this deal.
  • Neither Ryu Hyun-Jin (Dodgers) and Zack Wheeler (Mets), players who had not made his major league debut at the time but were initially included in these checklists, do NOT appear to have a card in their respective team's retail sets.
Finally, I mentioned at the beginning that there were two developments that occurred that made this post possible. The first was having all the images ready. The second?

I now have all 32 of the 2013 Topps Team sets. They arrived over the weekend, and after ensuring that all were included in the package, I have something to tide me over until Series 2 arrives in June. Time to add another 544 cards to the ever growing collection.

Sincerely,

JayBee Anama

2013 Topps Factory Set Sell Sheets are Live!!!

The sell sheets for this year's Topps Baseball Factory Sets have been live for some time now. But if you have not yet seen them (or it as the case may be), please take a look and see what is in store for 2013:

My comments:

There was no checklist included again, so we don't know who shows up in series 2.

And instead of rookie variations, adding to the never-ending boatload of parallels that are the latest craze in the Hobby (or at least that is what Topps is going with anyway), each box will include a five card pack of ORANGE BASE PARALLEL CARDS!!!  For the insane set collector or player collector who just HAS TO HAVE every color of the rainbow imaginable (remember, there are red parallel cards exclusive to Target, blue ones exclusive to Walmart, and purple cards found at Toys R Us), not to mention the green sparkled cards, the gold bordered cards, the black bordered cards, the pink bordered cards, the camouflaged bordered cards...and who knows what will show up in other factory sets later on in the year.

Thought I'd share. How is your chase going?

Sincerely,

JayBee Anama

Coming Soon to a Store Near You (If You Haven't Seen Them on the Internet Yet)...2012 Topps 17-Card Team Sets.

How about that? I'm actually going to get this in on time.

Unlike last year when my source for pictures didn't have everything I needed (and thus last year's post came out until the middle of May), I have all the pictures. I have all the checklists (edited because of a number of spelling mistakes from my source). The only thing I don't have, however, are the sets themselves. The goal is to get them all before the All-Star Game rosters are announced. But until then, this will have to suffice.

For the uninitiated, here is a bit of a background behind my history with Topps Team Sets (much of this has been written before):

In 2011, Topps introduced AL and NL All-Star Team Sets along with the 30 team sets.  Of course I had to get those as well.

For the record, I have been insane enough to buy not just one set, or even two. I have bought ALL 30 TEAM SETS for the last SIX YEARS (plus the two All-Star Sets from 2011).That's 182 team sets, roughly 2764 cards total, that I have added to my collection. What can I say, I wanted to collect them all...

I found the preliminary checklists for all these sets back in February, just in time for spring training.  However, a number of players who had found new homes before the season started weren't included.  So the original checklist that I found vanished online.  Keep in mind that the information gathered on here might not necessarily be accurate (they are of course subject to change) due to gathering this information online.  If these are the correct checklists, before this post ends, I will share some of my grievances with the checklists (if you caught me on Twitter last week, you'll get the idea of what I'm talking about).

So who's in? It makes for one of the longest posts on the blog, but it's well worth it. So here they are again, the checklists for all 30 teams.

All 30 team sets include the team's home stadium and unlike last year's "Home of the Reds" card, we now have a "Great American Ball Park" card.  All the stadiums are properly named (okay, save the debate about how corporate sponsorships in naming rights for stadiums for another time).  But I have a problem with this.

It's hard enough for some teams to get 16 players onto the eponymous set of 660.  That's why I like these team sets...you get players who would otherwise be ignored.  So I know that in past sets, we've had managers (Joe Maddon is on here this year), mascots (catch Fredbird with the rest of the Cardinals and Mariner Moose with the M's). I get that. If you notice, there is no trace of Mickey Mantle anywhere on the Yankees' team set (no offense to Mantle fans, but YAY!!!)  I can live with these...really, I can.

But is there any reason why...WHY!!!...there are three cards of Fenway Park on the Red Sox team set?  The Kingdome, I can understand (then again, is anybody in Seattle peeved that there are only 14 M's in your set to go with the Moose and two stadiums or are you content in knowing that 11 guys...maybe more...from your Opening Day roster was snubbed?) as it is no longer around.

Yes, Fenway is 100 years old. Was it really necessary though to include cards of what the Park looked like in 1912 AND 1967??? I think one card (of 1912 to show what the place originally looked like) would have made sense. But short of winning the pennant in 1967, why choose a picture from THAT year??? Hey Topps, any plans on doing a Fenway Park Legacy set since that other card company can't do it and the one with half the licenses can't use logos?

As prices for all 30 team sets are in the $4.99 - $8.99 range, I think I'll hold off on getting them right now (unless I happen to see them live at the Field of Dreams in Woodfield...all bets are off then) until the prices go down a bit (the one place I do enjoy ordering from doesn't even have anything listed). Regardless of when I get my hands on these cards and add them to my expanding collection, I hope putting these checklists online helps you decide to go out and get a team set, or two, or thirty.

Happy Hunting!!!

Sincerely,

JayBee Anama

2012 Topps Factory Set Sell Sheets are Live!!!

The sell sheet for this year's Topps Baseball Factory Sets is now live. Please take a look and see what is in store for 2012:

There was no checklist included, so we don't know who shows up in series 2...although that is a nice Prince Fielder card (notice he's in Tiger threads).

And instead of rookie variations (I think we don't have to worry about those anymore for the foreseeable future), each box will include a five card pack of ORANGE BASE PARALLEL CARDS!!!  For the insane set collector or player collector who just HAS TO HAVE every color of the rainbow imaginable (remember, there are red parallel cards exclusive to Target, blue ones exclusive to Walmart, and purple cards found at Toys R Us.  Who knows, maybe there will be green parallels when the Holiday set comes...making for an almost true rainbow experience (where does yellow fit in all of this???)

Thought I'd share.  Happy Hunting!!!

Sincerely,

JayBee Anama

So the Yankees and Blue Jays Are Getting 2012 Topps Team Sets After All

In December, I thought I'd beat everyone to the punch and announce that Topps is going to continue the retail packed team sets in 2012. I did this because I have EVERY team set they've put out in this format since 2006.

Yes, I'm insane.

And, yes, I will be going after these sets when they are put out to market whether online or live.

But there was a bit of a problem.

The source I had used to gather pictures of the packages I will (and that's a guarantee, folks) get this year only had 28 of the 30 team sets.  In fact, in December and January...EVERY site pre-selling these sets had many, and not all of the team sets depicted.  And in EVERY case, the teams involved were the New York Yankees and Toronto Blue Jays.

Well, that is now no longer the case.

Below are the pictures of the two sets I couldn't find back in December:

2012 Topps New York Yankees Team Set

2012 Topps Toronto Blue Jays Team Set

Why not bring all 30 team sets together for the first time on this humble, little blog:

If you want a preliminary checklist, well, the link is gone (I knew I should have taken the link when I had the chance.  The latest change to the checklist was the addition of Prince Fielder to the Tigers team set, which means somebody's going to be excluded from the original plans.  Oh well...

That's better.  Now if I can only get my hands on some money for the Master Set...

Sincerely,

JayBee Anama

A Very Very Late Post about...2011 Topps 17-Card Team Sets.

For the record, this post should have been written around the end of March, early April. However, because the source I was using didn't have all the pictures I wanted, I waited.

And waited.

And waited.

Meanwhile, everybody and their relatives are finding these sets everywhere and wondering why I haven't written anything yet.

Did I decide to stop collecting them this year? Of course not. In fact, as of now, I have 20 of the 30 teams as well as the 2 new All-Star Team sets. Even though I didn't post anything about them doesn't mean that I wasn't talking about them.  Want to know how popular these sets are becoming??? Sports Collectors Daily did a story on them as an underrated product. And this humble, little blog has featured cards from these team sets many times in its three-year history.

So let me first say that I am sorry for being late to the party.

Better late than never, though.

For the record, I have been insane enough to buy not just one set, or even two. I have bought ALL 30 TEAM SETS for the last FIVE YEARS!!! That's 150 team sets, roughly 2220 cards total, that I have added to my collection. What can I say, I wanted to collect them all...

In 2011, each team set comes once again with 17 cards. There is a catch though. Of the 30 teams, 29 include the home stadium of the team (for some reason, Progressive Field, home of the Indians, is not part of the team set).So each set (except the Indians) includes 16 players and the stadium (the Tribe gets a bonus player). Some teams don't get 16 players in the base set nowadays. But this year, each set will include 16 players from your favorite team. Meaning that a couple of bench guys and maybe one reliever OUTSIDE of the main set-up guy, might actually show up in these blister packs.

So who's in? Last year, I took the time to include all the players found in the initial checklist. After quick debate, I thought why not do it again? It makes for one of the longest posts on the blog, but it's well worth it. So here they are again, the checklists for all 30 teams. Please remember though that these checklists, like all other previews, are subject to change.

Wow, that was a lot. Unlike in past years, where I would purchase all 30 sets from one store for under $100.00, I have 20 of the above sets because one store that I stumbled upon had them. I would have been thrilled if they had all 30, but I took whatever I could. But I'm still missing some teams. Which ones:

Arizona
Florida
Houston
Kansas City
Los Angeles Angels
Oakland
Pittsburgh
San Diego
Seattle
Toronto

I do know now that since the site finally has the one set I've been waiting months for one lousy scan, I will order the above sets there (unless someone is kind enough to buy any of the above sets and send them my way). Where? I'm not saying. That's my secret. But as soon as I get the funds together, I'm making a phone call. Can't wait to see what they look like (I don't plan on opening ANY of the sets until I have all 30 in my possession).
I hope putting these checklists online helps you decide to go out and get a team set, or two, or thirty.

Happy Hunting!!!

Sincerely,

JayBee Anama

2011 Topps Factory Set Sell Sheets are Live!!!

The sell sheets for this year's Topps Baseball Factory Sets are now live. Please take a look and see what is in store for 2011:

My comments:

Notice something missing???  That's right!!!  No mention of team sets!!!  Does this mean that they are doing away with the annual Yankees, Red Sox, and token other team-specific factory sets?  Or will Topps manage to get a separate sell sheet going announcing that there will be a factory set for ALL 30 TEAMS??!
Card #500, the most hallowed numbers in a Topps set, has been awarded to Kevin Youkilis.  Deserving of the honor???  For me, I think it could have gone to somebody better.  What do you think?

Instead of a bonus five pack of rookies (probably saving them for the Holiday set), once again Topps will include a five-pack of red parallel cards. Now, I don't know how many of these factory sets were opened (I have yet to see someone with a full 660-card...or 661-card set if Topps' wonder boy, Stephen Strasburg, get a card here too?), but I'm pretty sure many of these red bordered beauties did not see the light of day.

As always, the checklists are all subject to change. Happy Hunting!!!

Sincerely,

JayBee Anama

Twenty-Seven World Championships...Twenty-Seven Yankees Cards.

So I know I've recently been on a tear about too many Yankees cards in every set...including the fact that as long as that person plays for the Bronx Bombers, even if he is the third string catcher or that mop up relief pitcher, he gets a Topps card even though other players on other teams playing those same roles don't even get a whiff of Topps card stock. But there are times where having too many Yankees cards makes sense. This is one of those times.

I found this set at Target the other week called the New York Yankees World Championship Set. It is a boxed set containing 27 cards featuring, obviously, one player from each of the Yankees' championship teams. Based on the front of the box, the cards would reflect the same design as that year's Topps set, and in 14 cases, it does. For the Yankee's championships prior to 1951 (there were thirteen of those), the players featured grace the iconic 1952 card design.

The checklist, with the cards numbered #YC1-#YC27, include:
  • 1923 Babe Ruth
  • 1927 Lou Gehrig
  • 1928 Leo Durocher
  • 1932 Lefty Gomez
  • 1936 Tony Lazzeri
  • 1937 Bill Dickey
  • 1938 Tommy Henrich
  • 1939 Red Rolle
  • 1941 Phil Rizzuto
  • 1943 Charlie Keller
  • 1947 Yogi Berra
  • 1949 Johnny Mize
  • 1950 Hank Bauer
  • 1951 Mickey Mantle
  • 1952 Mickey Mantle
  • 1953 Mickey Mantle
  • 1956 Don Larsen
  • 1958 Enos Slaughter
  • 1961 Roger Maris
  • 1962 Elston Howard
  • 1977 Thurman Munson
  • 1978 Reggie Jackson
  • 1996 Andy Pettitte
  • 1998 Derek Jeter
  • 1999 Jorge Posada
  • 2000 Mariano Rivera
  • 2009 Alex Rodriguez
Even though players like Berra, Mize, and Bauer all have cards in the 1952 set, the cards included here are not reprints from that year's set. The Mick did not actually appear in the 1951 set (although he does have a few cards created recently thanks to this year's Target/Walmart exclusive insert set. All cards honoring the Yank's World Series win after 1951 do feature that year's Topps design and a reprint of the featured player's card from that year's set. The backs of the cards include a picture of the World Series logo of that year, the NL team the Yankees faced that year and the result, and a brief synopsis about what the player on the front of the card that year.

So Yankees collectors, rejoice. There's another product out there made exclusively for you. For those who collect Hall of Famers, here's another card set for you. For set collectors who like products using older Topps designs, have at it. For fans of the other 29 teams...you might want to avoid this set.

Me, I'm adding the set I bought to the 2010 Topps binder.

Sincerely,

JayBee Anama

2010 Topps Factory Set Sell Sheets are Live!!!

The sell sheets for this year's Topps Baseball Factory Sets are now live. Please take a look and see what is in store for 2010:

My comments:

Again, they're hawking team sets. Not surprising since this has been done since 2004. Three teams this time (the Yankees and Red Sox...geez, what a surprise...and the Phillies!!!) No Cubs? No Dodgers? What, are there not 27 other teams? Don't they play in the midwest and west coast? Why even bother this year???

The checklist (third picture) shows card #638 as Babe Ruth/Lou Gehrig & Paul Konerko??? Granted, Konerko is a slugger, but I think this is a mistake. Upon further review, card #636 looks to be Evan Longoria/B. J. Upton, meaning that #637 is probably the Ruth/Gehrig card, and #638 is slotted for Konerko.

With the bonus in the regular set being red parallels (of what I'm assuming to be the base set), and they're numbered to boot, I guess that means that there won't be any rookie exclusives this year (unless they're saving them for the Target/Walmart sets and the Holiday factory sets). Hey, that means I don't actually have to go out and buy a factory set for the bonus cards.

The exclusives in each of the team sets are veteran/All-Star player heavy. The Yankees (#'d NYY1-5) are:
  • Derek Jeter
  • Alex Rodriguez
  • Mariano Rivera
  • Mark Teixeira
  • Curtis Granderson
Representing the Red Sox (BOS 1-5):

  • Dustin Pedroia
  • Jacoby Ellsbury
  • Victor Martinez
  • John Lackey
  • Daisuke Matsuzaka
Finally, the Phillies (PHI 1-5):
  • Roy Halladay
  • Ryan Howard
  • Chase Utley
  • Jimmy Rollins
  • Jayson Werth

Also, in case you haven't seen it yet, there will be an All-Star FanFest exclusive Topps factory set:

A bonus 5-card pack of Angels cards will be included with this set. Who's on it at this point has not been announced yet.

As always, the checklists are all subject to change. Happy Hunting!!!

Coming Soon to a Store Near You...2010 Topps 17-Card Team Sets.

Now, in 2006, there were 14 cards in each set. And while many cards had pictures similar to those found in the 2006 base set, there were a number of cards of players who were pictured in different uniforms, had different pictures entirely, or players who were left of the base set included, meaning that they were only found in these retail only sets. These must have sold very well because in 2007 and 2008, these 14-card packages returned to store shelves. In 2009, a bonus 15th card was added to each of the sets. These bonus cards could have been of the stadium, the manager, the team mascot, a bonus player, or even a President or two.

For the record, I have been insane enough to buy not just one set, or even two. I have bought ALL 30 TEAM SETS for the last FOUR YEARS!!! That's 120 team sets, roughly 1710 cards total, that I have added to my collection. What can I say, I wanted to collect them all...

In 2010, the team sets are back. But there aren't 14 cards, not even 15 cards...but an astounding 17 CARDS IN EVERY SET!!! Seventeen players in every set. Some teams don't get 17 players in the base set nowadays. But this year, each set will include 17 players from your favorite team.

Now, I have a source that can get me all 30 sets for under $100.00? Where? I'm not saying. That's my secret. But as soon as I get the funds together, I'm making a phone call to the place I bought the stuff last year. I'm looking forward to these cards. Can't wait to see what they look like. Some surprises along the way (Mickey Mantle...REALLY??? And what's the deal with the Royals??? They couldn't get 17 guys together that they had to use the MASCOT???)

I hope putting these checklists online helps you decide to go out and get a team set, or two, or thirty.

Happy Hunting!!!

Sincerely,
