2013 Topps Adam Greenberg. |
By now, many of us know the story of Adam Greenberg. He made his major league debut with the Chicago Cubs on July 9, 2005. Making his first plate appearance as a Major Leaguer, he was hit in the head by the first pitch from Marlins pitcher Valerio De Los Santos. The story has been told countless times since of his struggles resulting from the concussion. Still, he perservered, playing in the minors and in independent leagues, even facing De Los Santos in 2011 (he got a hit in his first at-bat against him since the beaning).
It wasn't until 2012 when a gentleman filed a petition asking any team to allow Greenberg one at-bat. The Miami Marlins, the same team that he faced that fateful day seven years ago, obliged. Signing him to a one-day contract, Greenberg was inserted into this evening's game against the New York Mets as a pinch-hitter in the sixth inning. Facing knuckleballer R. A. Dickey, Greenberg struck out in three pitches. The crowd cheered, giving Greenberg a standing ovation. He did not take the field for the seventh inning. His lifetime stats now read: 0-1, .000 batting average, 1 strikeout, .500 OBP.
To commemorate Greenberg's second chance, Topps will include him in the set for 2013. It's an incredible story, and well deserved. He even gets the RC logo on his card because technically, he's still qualifies as a rookie, even though he hasn't played in the majors in seven years.
Who knows, maybe he'll get another shot. He led his minor league teams in a lot of hitting categories, so we know he can still play.
At least now I'll have a card of him to add to my collection next year.
Congratulations Adam.
Sincerely,

I love comments. Please leave comments!!! (Ego, hush). Just keep your words clean (I show my kids this stuff), and the comment will be accepted.
If you must leave a comment anonymously, that's fine too. Although I wish you wouldn't. I'd like to get to know the people who actually read this humble little blog.
Thank you very much.
