And Then There Were 10!

The 2012 Major League Baseball season is finally over.  As twenty teams pack their bags and look to the 2013 season, ten teams will continue on to pursue the pennant, with the ultimate goal of winning the 2012 World Series.

Starting this year, two more teams, one from each league were added to the playoff field.  The reason behind it was so that the "Wild Card Teams" would have to fight to advance instead of being on even footing with the three division winners from their respective leagues.  This year, there were plenty of surprises as a couple of teams who had not made it into the postseason in more than a decade are moving on thanks to the extra wild card slot.

So before the end of the week, the following wild card teams will play in a winner-takes-all one game playoff to advance into the divisional tournament on Friday, October 5:

  • The Texas Rangers, the two-time defending AL Champions, who all but had the AL West division title wrapped up, now find themselves playing for the chance to defend their title by hosting a one-game playoff against the surprising Baltimore Orioles.  It is the first time Baltimore had a winning season since the team reached the postseason in 1997.
  • The St. Louis Cardinals, the defending World Series Champions, visit Atlanta to take on the Braves, who return to postseason play for the first time since 2010.
The winners of the games above will take on the AL East Division Champion New York Yankees and the NL East Division Champion Washington Nationals in a best-of-five Division series beginning on Sunday, October 7.  Both teams earned Home Field Advantage throughout the playoffs.

The AL West Champion Oakland Athletics, who won the division by beating the Rangers on Wednesday, take on the AL Central Champion Detroit Tigers.  While the NL Central Division Champion Cincinnati Reds challenge the NL West Division Champion San Francisco Giants.

Good luck to all.  May the best team win.

Sincerely,

I love comments. Please leave comments!!! (Ego, hush). Just keep your words clean (I show my kids this stuff), and the comment will be accepted.

If you must leave a comment anonymously, that's fine too. Although I wish you wouldn't. I'd like to get to know the people who actually read this humble little blog.

Thank you very much.
